Cover intro on inside cover of The APTS Magazine November 2011 issue
Written by the staff of The APTS Magazine about the Rushforths

"With a commitment and passion that is unequaled, Alan and Jan Marie Rushforth continue to be the property management industry’s strongest advocate of solar hot water. They have tirelessly lobbied, sent out informational papers, addressed legislators and teamed with a host of environmental groups. Their company, Rushforth Solar, has proven to be a cost-effective beacon for those who not only talk “green” but walk “green” as well. Among the many they have served are Lindy Property Management and The Galman Group, two leaders in the apartment industry. They are heading the solar industry’s efforts to return state subsidies ...and it is one they will most certainly win."

65% Subsidy (35% from PA Sunshine up to $50,000 + 30% Federal) won’t last. We are already on borrowed time for the PA subsidy. By summer PA DEP thinks the PA subsidy will all be subscribed.

Spring, 2011
4 more Lindy Properties apartment buildings go Solar in early 2011
The first third of 2011 was busy and productive getting 4 more apartment buildings outfitted with Solar Hot Water – 2 buildings at Academia Suites 1100 W. Godfrey Ave, and 2 more buildings at Longwood Manor, 2400 Benson St., Philadelphia. 3 of the 4 buildings were also upgraded with ultra high efficiency hot water heaters at the same time.

The 4th building had electrically heated water. In the all-electric building, aside from the usual energy savings for the owner, and aside from the usual avoided fuel emissions, this solar installation will be keeping 2 industrial size electric heaters off most of the time, especially during heat waves in the summer, which is exactly when the electric grid is most heavily stressed and needs the most help. So these solar systems can create benefits on multiple levels – for the owners’ wallet, for the environment, and the regional electric grid.

Photos of each installation are on the Projects page.

Rushforth Solar talk on Solar Thermal for Commercial Applications
Tuesday, Jan 18, 2011 at 7pm, for the Philadelphia Solar Energy Association at the Philadelphia Library, 4th Floor, at Logan Circle on Ben Franklin Parkway. Free talk highlights: several commercial drain back Solar Hot Water Installation projects using non- pressurized EPDM lined tanks for Phila area commercial (mostly apartment) buildings. The economics of this type of application will also be covered.

If you’ve wondered about Solar Hot Water and if it could make sense for your apartment or commercial properties, this would be especially useful for you.

PA + Federal subsidies are 65% now, but PA subsidies may end in early 2011: In September 2010, the Solar Hot Water small business subsidy was raised from 25% to 35% with a raised subsidy cap to $50,000. However, DEP is telling us that the PA Sunshine subsidies may be gone sometime in the first quarter of 2011. On the good side, the federal 30% incentive tax credit will be continued as a grant through the end of 2011. This grant option was included with the extension of the December 2010 tax credits.

November 4 - 9, 2010
A solar consultation / retreat at a 100% off grid solar compound in Baja, Mexico
Rushforth Solar is continually working to refine its technology. On November 4-9, 2010 Alan and Jan Rushforth traveled to Baja California, Mexico for a consultation/ solar retreat with Sisyan, LLC. On the Sea of Cortez, the 100% solar powered compound was sunny and beautiful. Desalinating sea water by the sun was particularly impressive.

The founder of Sisyan, Yan Kunczynski, is an accomplished inventor/ builder/ engineer best known for his contributions to aerial tramways. Since 2008 he has been doing intense R&D to improve commercial scale solar water heating. Rushforth Solar and Sisyan found they had much information to share and have since worked closely on several key aspects of solar water heating such as storage, collector mounting, and thermal analysis. (Picture shown is a portion of the Sisyan year-round solar collector performance testing equipment.)

PA raises SHW subsidy from 25% to 35%. Effective September 1, 2010 the DEP raised the subsidy on eligible Solar Hot Water systems from 25% to 35%. They also raised the residential subsidy cap from $2,000 to $5,000 and raised the commercial cap from $20,000 to $50,000. This is big news for Solar Hot Water in PA, especially for larger systems. Before systems costing $80,000 reached a cap of $20,000 subsidy and would get no more regardless of how much larger they were. Now systems up to $143,000 get a full 35% subsidy capped at the higher $50,000 amount, so the payback numbers on larger buildings (for example apartment buildings over 40 units) will tend to be much more viable.
